Jimmy Kimmel has a message for the FCC, and fans, after the agency demanded shows like his provide equal air time for candidates from multiple political parties

Kimmel said that the Trump administration's FCC and its chairman Brendan Carr are "reinterpreting long agreed-upon rules to stifle us"

"It's another example of this administration trying to squash anyone who doesn't support them by following 'the rules,' " Kimmel said

Jimmy Kimmel told viewers that the FCC is "coming for us again" after Brendan Carr's latest guidelines for late-night television and daytime talk shows — and he has "no idea what the outcome of this is gonna be."

During his monologue on Thursday, Jan. 22, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host, 58, gave a detailed explanation of the Federal Communications Commission's latest public notice, as the agency said that shows like Kimmel's must provide equal airtime for candidates from different parties when interviewing political figures.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, FCC chairman Carr — a vocal opponent of Jimmy Kimmel Live! who previously advocated for the show's brief suspension in September — shared a release to X in an attempt to remind both daytime and late-night TV programs of what he called an "obligation to provide all candidates with equal opportunities." He also claimed some shows may have been "ignoring or misreading the law in recent years" and alleged his agency "enforcing the statute passed by congress is not weaponization."

Nonetheless, Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and others are calling out Carr, 47, and citing a two-decade-old decision from the FCC in 2006, when the agency decided the similarly formatted The Tonight Show was exempt from the "equal opportunity" language laid out. In the years since, political candidates have indeed appeared on late-night television and on daytime TV shows like The View without the shows in question having to give political opponents equal airtime.

Now, during his latest monologue on Jan. 22, Kimmel claimed that the FCC and Carr — who he called "Brendan Cartel" — are "reinterpreting long agreed-upon rules to stifle us."

"Sometimes there are 20 people from 20 different parties running for the same spot and if you can't interview all of them, you can't interview any of them" Kimmel said.

He then cited Jay Leno's 2006 interview with then-gubernatorial candidate in California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a ruling that followed where the FCC decided it was "not subject to those equal-time" rules.

"That's how every talk show has operated since then, until this week," Kimmel said, telling his audience that Carr claimed his show "no longer qualified" for the exemption.

"It's a sneaky little way of keeping viewpoints that aren't his off air," Kimmel alleged. "It's his latest attack on free speech and it's a joke because this isn't the '50s anymore. Back then there were only three major networks."

He added, "Whatever happens, I want to point it out. It's another example of this administration trying to squash anyone who doesn't support them by following 'the rules...' And it's especially upsetting because we've been working so hard with the FCC, hand-in-hand, for so many years, bleeping and blurring the big TV moments of the week, whether they need it or not."

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host also touched on the FCC news during his Wednesday, Jan. 21 monologue, when he said President Donald Trump's "minions" at the agency were planning to "make it difficult for shows like ours and The View to interview politicians they don't align with."

Colbert, host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, also touched on the FCC's new guidelines during his Thursday show, calling it an "attempt to silence me, Jimmy and Seth [Meyers]."

"And I've got to say one thing to the FCC," he said. "Hey, I'm flattered you think that appearing on my show has the power to affect politics in any way. I've been doing this job for 21 years and let me tell you something, buddy: If our government had turned out the way I had chosen, you would not have the power to make this announcement."

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert airs weekdays on CBS at 11:35 p.m. ET.

On Friday, Jan. 23, the fashion mogul, 51, penned a tribute to the musician, 20, on her Instagram Stories — just five days after her eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, dropped major bombshell allegations against her and his dad, David Beckham.

"So proud of you Cruz!!" Victoria wrote over a repost of Cruz's Instagram announcement that he is going on tour with his band, Cruz Beckham and the Breakers.

"I'm so excited to announce the first mini tour. It'll be my dream to play you the music I've been working on. see you there? :) let's av a good time shall we," Cruz captioned his post shared on Friday. "TICKETS GO ON SALE FRI, 30th OF JAN 10AM."

Victoria also shared a similar sentiment in the comment section of Cruz's announcement. "We r all so proud of u Cruz ❤️," she wrote.

Additionally, David, 50m showed his support for his son and the tour news by reposting the announcement on his Instagram Stories and adding, "🩷🩷🩷🩷."

The tributes come five days after the couple's eldest son broke his silence after months of speculation about a rift within the family.

Brooklyn, 26, shared a shocking series of posts detailing what he claims is an ongoing issue with his parents, who he alleges are trying "endlessly to ruin" his relationship with his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, in the name of publicity.

Other accusations included claims that his parents tried to "bribe" him into "signing away the rights" to his name before his and Nicola's wedding and that Victoria "hijacked" the couple's first wedding dance and acted "inappropriately" during the incident.

"I do not want to reconcile with my family. I'm not being controlled, I'm standing up for myself for the first time in my life," he wrote in part.

Following his statement, a source close to the situation told PEOPLE that Brooklyn and Nicola, 31, "never wanted any of this."

Cruz, meanwhile, hasn't shied away from posting on social media amid the family drama. In fact, he's seemingly adding to it with cryptic posts of his own.

On Thursday, Cruz shared a snapshot of him holding a can of Guaraná Antarctica, a popular Brazilian soft drink made from the Amazonian guaraná berry. While the beverage itself didn't seemingly carry much significance to the narrative, his song choice that backed the post did.

"I'm Not Such an Innocent Girl," the 2001 song released by Victoria, was the track Cruz paired with the photo.

While there was no context added to the post, nor an explicit reason as to why he chose to use that song, fans of the singer are convinced it's part of the social media-driven campaign to skyrocket the track to No. 1 on the charts.

The song choice may also be in reference to the long-rumored feud between Victoria and Nicola.

Netflix has played a large role in changing the movie industry in the past decade or so, and, according to Matt Damon, it wants to make even more changes.

The actor recently addressed how the streamer has tweaked the way films are made — specifically how plots are reiterated in their dialogue — now that so many viewers are watching them at home versus in a theater.

"I went to see *One Battle After Another* on IMAX — there's nothing like that feeling," Damon said, recalling a trip he took to the theater with his family while promoting *The Rip*, his new Netflix crime-thriller with longtime collaborator Ben Affleck, during an appearance on *The Joe Rogan Experience* this week. "You're in with, you know, a bunch of strangers, but people in your community, and you're having this experience together. I always say it's more like going to church — you show up at an appointed time. It doesn't wait for you."

Seeing a movie at home, however, is another story.

"You're watching in a room, the lights are on, other shit's going on, the kids are running around, the dogs are running around, whatever it is," he continued. "It's just a very different level of attention that you're willing, or that you're able, to give to it."

That difference in viewing habits is why Netflix wants moviemakers to tell their stories another way, the actor-director said.

"The standard way to make an action movie that we learned was, you usually have three set pieces — one in the first act, one in the second, one in the third," Damon explained. "You spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That's your finale. And now they're like, 'Can we get a big one in the first five minutes? We want people to stay.'"

He added that the streamer pushes for a framing that reiterates "the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they're watching."

"It's going to really start to infringe on how we're telling these stories," Damon predicted.

However, Affleck, who co-founded the production company Artists Equity with Damon in 2022, pointed out that this method isn't the only way for streaming-only releases to keep audiences tuned in.

"But then you look at *Adolescence*, and it didn't do any of that s---," Affleck said. "And it's f---ing great. And it's dark too. It's tragic and intense. [It's about] this guy who finds out his kid is accused of murder. There are long shots of the back of their heads. They get in the car, nobody says anything."

While Damon said he thinks shows are the exception, Affleck asserted that the limited series' success proves that streamers don't have to spoon-feed viewers the plot to hold their attention.

"It demonstrates that you don't need to do any of that s--- to get people [to watch]," Affleck said, adding that he doesn't think streaming poses an "existential threat" and that storytelling was bound to shift as circumstances resulted in fewer people going to theaters.

But Affleck maintained that theaters will never be obsolete: "People are still going to go to the movies because of what you said. It feels like a cool thing to do. I'm going to go see *The Odyssey,* I guarantee you, in a theater, no matter what."

In *The Rip*, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops whose loyalties are put to the test when they find millions of dollars in drug money hidden in a rundown home. To prepare for their roles, they spent time with real police officers.

"All the stuff that I find surprising and that I tend to be proud of comes from research," Affleck told ** of the experience. "I think I'm better skilled at recognizing interesting things from the world that I can put into films than just conjuring up from my imagination something to do."

Damon, meanwhile, said he was drawn to the script because "it was a page-turner."

"There are these competing agendas, and people aren't saying exactly what's going on, and you're trying to figure out who you can trust, who you can't, who's the good guy, who's the bad guy," he added of the action-packed affair, which based on a true story.

- Mel Brooks says Richard Pryor "spurred on" *Blazing Saddles*' use of the N-word.

- The filmmaker adds that "racial prejudice is the engine that really drives the film."

- Ben Stiller and Dave Chappelle also offer their perspectives on the film's provocative content.

Mel Brooks is reflecting on Richard Pryor's impact on *Blazing Saddles*.

The *Young Frankenstein *director, who co-wrote the iconic Western spoof with the legendary standup comedian, explained how the boundary-pushing movie came to include so many uses of the N-word.

"I was spurred on by Richard," Brooks says in the documentary *Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man *(out Jan. 22). "He said, 'You gotta tell the truth.'"

Brooks explains that Pryor told him about the wide range of applications for the slur. "He said, 'It's used; sometimes it's used sweetly by brothers, and sometimes it's just a vicious, terrible curse, which breaks your heart,'" he recalls Pryor saying.

The *Spaceballs* filmmaker took Pryor's advice to heart, but didn't want audiences to assume that *he* was the reason the movie contained so many N-words.

"I said, 'Well, I'm gonna tell the world — I'm gonna tell them the truth — I'm gonna tell them it's your fault that there are so many N-words used in this movie,'" Brooks says in the doc.

Brooks said that the movie, which features numerous racist characters using slurs to refer to Cleavon Little's Sheriff Bart, has a lasting legacy thanks to its lampooning of racism.

"If you want a comedy to last, you have to have an engine driving it, and in *Blazing Saddles*, racial prejudice is the engine that really drives the film," he says

The documentary also features commentary from Ben Stiller, who remains flabbergasted that *Blazing Saddles* was able to be produced with so much provocative content, and says that his own film, *Tropic Thunder*, pales in comparison to the audacity of Brooks' movie.

"Now you look at it, and you're like, 'Oh my God, this movie,'" Stiller reflects. "You know, people like to say, 'Oh, you couldn't make *Tropic Thunder* today,' like, you really couldn't make *Blazing Saddles* today, or ever, I think? But what's behind it, what you realize is like, he's doing this satire, but he's really going for it, trying to expose the hypocrisy and how screwed up our world is in terms of how people treat other people."

Dave Chappelle also appears in the documentary, and shares his own perspective on *Blazing Saddles*. "Man, you can do damn near anything if it's funny," he says. "So no, most people can't make that movie ever, today or even back then. But Mel Brooks could."

Don't expect *Jackass* star Johnny Knoxville to pull the same stunts he did once upon a time.

The fearless reality star, who launched his signature MTV show in 2000 and went on to produce multiple movies under the brand, admits that even he has his limits now.

"I can't do anything where I can get another concussion," he said in a new interview with Syndicate X Library this week when asked if he's allowed to do stunts anymore, adding that he's "way over my limit for concussions."

Bethenny Frankel has been diagnosed with stage 2 chronic kidney disease — and she's using her diagnosis to help her fans.

"I have a medical announcement. Not because I want you to worry, but because I want you to take precautions in your own life, be mindful," the Real Housewives of New York City alum, 55, began in a video shared to her Instagram page Thursday. "Months ago, I decided that I was going to be very proactive about blood tests, bone density — all the things I had heard people talking about — and I started to take a series of blood tests. And each time my kidney function was coming up low."

Frankel was referred to a specialist, with whom she reluctantly made an appointment that led to her diagnosis, although the doctor was unsure about what caused the kidney disease.

"He said to me, 'You have stage 2 chronic kidney disease.'" Frankel recalled. "He said it could be a function of this traumatic experience I had years ago when I almost died from an allergy attack. It could have done damage to the kidney. It could be autoimmune."

She said that her disease has likely caused infections — "I do get UTIs, not as much anymore" — and that the first line of treatment was to stay hydrated. The doctor even suggested it could be linked to a lack of water intake, to which the reality star admitted, "You guys know that I always have a hydration packet. I'm holding a bottle, but I'm not usually drinking it."

The specialist stressed to Frankel that she would have to increase her water intake, as well as cut out ibuprofen, Aleve or Advil, turmeric, and a few other things she couldn't recall — including ice cream, which she was eating on camera. "I remembered after," she said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, stage 2 chronic kidney disease can result in "mild loss of kidney function," which cleans the blood by removing waste and extra fluid, leaving the body as urine. Kidneys also help control blood pressure and balance salt and minerals. A chronic kidney disease diagnosis usually occurs when the kidneys are damaged for more than a few months. Lowering blood pressure — along with regular monitoring — can keep the disease from progressing.

Frankel asserted that she wasn't sharing her diagnosis for sympathy or to worry her followers, but wanted to use her experience to encourage her fans to "take precautions" in their own lives and "be mindful."

"Maybe I'll have to deal with this forever," Frankel said. "But I wanted to tell you because I think it's important to get all your bloodwork done. Be thorough. Then do the follow-ups for anything that seems like an outlier. And frankly, get your bloodwork done maybe six months and then six months later, because different stuff could come up and sometimes it's an aberration and sometimes it means something."

Frankel stressed that her situation was born of a pattern, adding that she hopes to get answers from the "part-time doctors" of TikTok. "I don't know exactly what it means. Many of you will, which is also why I'm sharing with you."

"Medical cautionary tale," she captioned her video post.

As Frankel mentioned in her video, she's been candid about the medial issues she's contended with over the past few years.

In 2023, she opened up about having been diagnosed with long COVID and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), an autoimmune condition that causes varying symptoms when transitioning from lying down to standing up, such as fatigue, dizziness and a fast heart rate. And earlier this month, she contracted a bacterial infection while on vacation in St. Barts.
