One of the Boston Red Sox’s hottest prospects got fired up during a post-home-run scuffle.
During a minor league game on Wednesday, July 22 between the Greenville Drive and the Hub City Spartanburgers — the High-A affiliates of the Red Sox and the Texas Rangers, respectively — Drive outfielder Justin Gonzales hit a high drive toward left field for a home run. The hit, his 13th home run of the year, ultimately brought in three runs for the team.
After Gonzales, 19, completed the trip around the bases by jogging over home plate, words appeared to be exchanged with Spartanburgers catcher Cal Stark. The umpire stepped up to keep Stark and Gonzales from getting any closer to one another, but the resulting scuffle led players to swarm the pair. Gonzales reached over his teammates and coaches, managing to strike Stark’s mask.
Players from both benches continued to flock from the bullpen onto the field, and several players’ helmets were knocked off during the incident.
Gonzales was ejected from the game as a result of the melee, but no further penalty has been announced, according to the New York Post. The Drive won Wednesday’s game, 13-6.

Gonzales, who hails from the Dominican Republic, caught the attention of MLB in 2024, when he signed out of his home country with the Red Sox for $250,000 as a top prospect. The team named him its Latin program player of the year in 2024 following a strong performance in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, according to MLB. He has been playing for the Drive since August 2025 after being promoted from the Single-A Salem Red Sox.

Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 210 pounds, Gonzales ranks as the Red Sox’s No. 3 prospect. His expected major league debut is in 2028.
“He’s only 19. Lucky for him, he’s playing baseball,” former Boston manager Alex Cora an interview with the MLB in March. “He was born in the Dominican. If not, he would be playing tight end for somebody. He’s a freak athlete.”
