- The news comes after Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for his performance.

- Season 1 dropped its eight episodes in January, with Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery.

In a surprising move for the now Emmy-nominated *Wonder Man*, Marvel canceled the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II-fronted superhero comedy series after previously renewing the title for season 2, ** has learned.

The show, starring Abdul-Mateen as Hollywood actor and comic book character Simon Williams, premiered on Disney+ to positive critical and audience reception. Marvel and the streamer renewed the show in March, but now they are pulling the plug.

The characters themselves, meanwhile, may appear elsewhere in the MCU.

So what happened? Reports suggest that a season 2 writers’ room never opened and the scribes have since been released to pursue other projects.

Hours after the news hit, Abdul-Mateen responded with an Instagram post. “That’s life, right?” he wrote. “Everything will shake out. I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it.”

The actor thanked all the fans, including those who posted reactions to YouTube, as well as those who shared encouraging messages either over social media or in person. “Thinking of you all today,” he concluded. “I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching…And uhh…See you at the EMMYS.”

Season 1’s eight episodes followed the character of Simon opposite Ben Kingsley’s return as Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest role to date was posing as the Mandarin in *Iron Man 3* (2013). Simon learns that legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film *Wonder Man*, so he pursues a potentially life-changing role in the reboot.

Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings* and *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, created the *Wonder Man* TV series with showrunner Guest. Cretton directed the first two episodes.

Guest commented on the cancelation on his Instagram Stories. “So proud of the show we made,” he wrote Thursday, before thanking Cretton and his two main stars. “Want to thank everyone who watched and all the critics who supported us,” Guest added.

The series was a standout for Marvel in that it deviated from the traditional fare. It was just as much a satirical look behind the curtain of Hollywood as it was a product of the superhero pipeline.

In a January interview for what is now the series finale, Cretton told EW, “We already have been just brainstorming, imagining where they could go next, but we can’t really tease anything at this point.”

“Of course we [want a second season],” Kingsley said at the time. “It would be dishonest to say, “Ooooh, I don’t know. Let’s wait.” Of course we do. I’ll say it to the world.”

Abdul-Mateen, also known for *The Matrix Resurrections* and Netflix’s *Man on Fire* TV adaptation, earned an Emmy nomination for the role in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He’s nominated alongside Steve Carell for *Rooster, *Matthew Rhys for *Widow’s Bay, *Jason Segel for *Shrinking, *and Martin Short for *Only Murders in the Building.*
