Kate Winslet is advocating for women "to keep being real" in the face of beauty trends.
The Oscar-winning actress, 50, mused about the "terrifying" popularity of appearance-altering procedures in a Sunday Times interview published Dec. 6, days ahead of the release of her directorial debut, "Goodbye June."
"Oh, it's terrifying," she told the British newspaper when asked about cosmetic injections. "I think no, not you! Why?"
The "Titanic" star went on to call the trend "devastating. If a person's self-esteem is so bound up in how they look it's frightening."
The discourse around 'Wicked' stars and their bodies: Is this a slippery slope?
After mentioning "so many people are on weight-loss drugs," Winslet commented, "Some are making choices to be themselves; others do everything they can to not be themselves."
She continued, "And do they know what they are putting in? The disregard for one's health is terrifying. It bothers me now more than ever. It is (expletive) chaos out there."
"No one's listening because they've become obsessed with chasing an idea of perfection to get more likes on Instagram. It upsets me so much," the actress lamented. "What idea of perfection are people aspiring to? I blame social media and its effect on mental health."
For years, Winslet has been outspoken about being "comfortable" in her own skin without undergoing enhancements. In 2011, when she was 35, she told The Telegraph that cosmetic surgery "goes against my morals" and vowed to "never give in."

As interviewer Jonathan Dean described in The Sunday Times, Winslet screwed up her face and showed her wrinkles to prove she "hasn't got anything in it."
"My favorite thing is when your hands get old," she added. "That's life, in your hands. Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 70 and what upsets me is that young women have no concept of what being beautiful actually is."
A number of celebrities have been candid about altering their appearances – a list that includes Kris Jenner, Christina Applegate, Sofía Vergara and Kristin Davis. Experts have praised public figures' transparency for offsetting unrealistic beauty standards that are especially pervasive on social media.
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Daniel Barrett told USA TODAY in 2021, "Many celebrities look good naturally, but many also have work done. And when they're not honest about it, I think they're being unethical because they're in the spotlight.
Earlier this year, University of Vermont associate professor Lizzy Pope told USA TODAY, "We're almost seeing a return to the outward profession of the desire to be skinny, whereas for a while it's been, 'I want to be healthier; I want to engage in wellness.'"
