It's been over 20 years since Death Cab for Cutie went platinum with their major label debut, Plans...but as longtime fans know, they were already an established (and acclaimed) indie band at that point. Now, the group has announced that they're going back to their roots by leaving Atlantic Records for the independent label, ANTI-, and that's not all: They're also heading out on tour this summer with some very special guests.

In a recent Instagram post, Death Cab for Cutie revealed both their label change and upcoming tour dates (much to the delight of fans).

"We're excited to be going out on tour this summer in North America," the post read.

"One of our favorite parts of being in this band is getting to be out on the road with artists that inspire us. Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som, and Nation of Language have made some of our favorite albums in recent years and we're stoked they'll be joining us. Presale starts Wednesday, January 28 at 10am local. Onsale starts Friday, January 30 at 10am local. Sign up for presale now at deathcabforcutie.com (link in bio)."

"Additionally, we are thrilled to share that we're joining the roster at @antirecords which includes some of our favorite artists, old friends and in many cases, both," the message continued. "We also can't wait to begin this new chapter with the wonderful staff at ANTI- and share with you what we've been working on."

Fans in the comments were thrilled about the upcoming tour, with one person writing, "AHHHHHHHHH!" "So excited," added someone else.

Death Cab for Cutie's upcoming jaunt kicks off on May 29 in Denver and will stop at a number of cities including Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Los Angeles before wrapping up in Paso Robles, California, on Aug. 7.

In a 2022 interview with Paste, frontman Ben Gibbard reflected on the "staying power" of Death Cab for Cutie's music, and how music can be passed down from one generation to the next.

"This might be a slightly reactive thing to say, because I'm trying to protect my own choice to be a middle-aged rock and roller, but the older The Rolling Stones are getting, and people say, 'Can you believe these guys are still doing it in their 50s? Their 60s? Or their 70s?' Or whatever. My response is, 'Well, yeah, of course I can!' People love that music!" Gibbard said.

"And people wanna see and hear the artists that made those songs, songs that were so important in their lives," he continued. "And I, personally, for the sake of my own career, I'm overjoyed that the culture has determined that it's okay to be middle aged and still playing rock and roll music. So we'll see. I've heard that cultures kind of exist for the generation it was there for, and then the generation after that generation. So it's like, your parents listened to this music, then they have it on in the house all the time when you're growing up, and it becomes music that you like, maybe begrudgingly at first. But then you become an adult and you realize that you love that music."

"So I guess time will tell if any of the music that I, or we, have made has staying power past the two generations that were there to experience it," Gibbard added. "But for the sake of our music, I certainly hope so!"
