Maria Shriver wants her followers to "wake up" amid the ongoing turmoil throughout the United States.
The journalist and former First Lady of California took to Instagram on Monday, Jan. 26 to share a stern—yet hopeful—message about the current state of affairs in the U.S., specifically after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by ICE agents over the weekend.
Shriver, who has shared multiple posts online to denounce the shooting death of Pretti as well as Renee Good, who was killed by ICE officers in Minneapolis just weeks prior.

Starting off her latest message by telling her followers to "Listen up," Shriver wrote, "Let's do better. Let's find our common humanity. Let's wake up."
"We all have to look each other in the eye. It doesn't matter if you are running for office, running a company, or if you are going to DC to kiss the ring because you need some approvals for a contract," she continued, "No more excuses."

In the caption of her post, Shriver went on to share an anecdote about her teenage niece, who Shriver said "believes that we the people do not have the power to change what is going on in our country."
"'Oh but we do,' I say. 'You know we do,'" Shriver wrote. "One by one. we take action. One by one, we join together. One by one, we realize that we the people are way bigger than any one man—way more powerful."

"The greatness of our country lies within we the people!" she continued in the hopeful message. "Once upon a time the people woke up to their own strength, their own courage, their own power, and then everything changed!"
Shriver's message on Instagram received an outpouring of support from a slew of celebrities, including stars like Jennifer Garner, Melanie Griffith, Naomi Watts and more who "liked" the post.
